DESIGNED UP NORTH IN SALTBURN-BY-THE-SEA
After working in the print industry for several years as an Operations Manager, I wanted to start something new which I could fit around family life. This is why the business is named after our little ones favourite word at the time! So slowly slowly, working on evenings and during naps, I began to create mainly prints and cards, inspired by the North, nature as well as a love of retro design and anything colourful. Alongside my own designs, I began some collaborations and freelance work, which I really enjoy. It’s great to be able to create designs and products for other small businesses too.
More recently, I have really enjoyed designing and facilitating other creative sessions such as drop-in workshops and commissioned participatory art projects. You can read more about these various projects below.

FEATURED PARTICIPATATORY ART PROJECT
I had the opportunity to work at the brilliant Between the Tides festival (organised by Redcar & Cleveland Council) in the summer. Working along the the esplanade in Redcar, I spent a day facilitating chalk art with families, children and adults. I drew rows of rectangles along the pavement, creating the space for an temporary outdoor gallery. Participants were able to take their ownership of their own space to draw a scene, pattern or their favourite object. It was fantastic to see residents and visitors walking along the length of the gallery, looking at what had been created as they passed by.
On the 2nd day of the festival, due to the changing weather, the project altered a little and instead I invited participants to draw on windows. Again I divided the windows into rectangles, giving each group or individual a space to create. It created another colourful outdoor gallery for the day.
FEATURED PARTICIPATATORY ART PROJECT
Working as an artist with Guisborough Arts, I was commissioned to design and undertake a participatory art project reacting to their theme of ‘giant’. The sessions would involve creating the art in a series of 15 sessions at local care homes with the residents.
I wanted to find a way to make the ‘giant’ easier for the residents to engage with, so I decided to create a series of 5 images with the Giant exploring the local area. The 5 pieces feature Redcar seafront, Marske Beach, Saltburn Cliff Lift, Gisborough Priory and Roseberry Topping, meaning they are well known local landmarks and areas, close to the care homes.
I drew each image as a black & white outline, so that the residents could then add colour, texture and more detail using mixed media. The only element that remained the same across the 5 pieces was the Giant, which was printed in colour. The residents then coloured in the pieces using paint (applied with brushes & sponges), pencil crayons and tissue paper. Each finished image is a unique collage, to be displayed during in August 2024 in Guisborough with hopefully more locations to follow.
FEATURED DROP-IN WORKSHOP
As part of the Cleveland Pride festival, Curious Arts organised some quiet crafts to take place in Saltburn Library. I was asked to provide an idea for a workshop that would be suitable for all ages.
To reflect the festivals feel and the message of ‘love is love’, I created a drop-in workshop to create 3D paper heart decorations. Participants were encouraged to colour in the individual hearts that made the decoration in colours that were meaningful to them or embrace the colourful rainbow of pride. It was lovely to see how people added patterns, messages and made something to take home with them.
FEATURED THAT DESIGN STUDIO WORKSHOP
This workshop was about creating something intricate in a relaxed, environment. All of the pieces were pre-cut, giving the participants lots more time to work on the style and arrangement. It also took away the need for using any very sharp tools. All of the individual pieces were created specially for this workshop and produced using recycled card stock. The flora and fauna was designed to be cohesive, whilst still allowing for plenty of creativity. There were a choice of two wreath ring colours and different twines to hang them with.
The flowers varied in size, colour and shape. Participants were given ideas on how to layer and combine the pieces as well as shaping them. They also considered the layout, balance and colour scheme for their wreaths. Everyone finished the workshop with a finished wreath which was unique to them.
freelance projects & commissions
Featured PROJECT
I’ve worked with Jules on a wide variety of projects, from creating bespoke packaging for her decals to signage and product designs.
As the Northern Power Garms brand has grown, it’s been fantastic to be involved.
Featured PROJECT
I was approached by TVA after they had seen my Colours of Teesside design. They commissioned me to design and print a ‘Colours of Tees Valley’ version as cards with a message and logo printed inside.
The cards were used as part of a welcome pack to promote the local area, that were given to representatives from across the country at the Tourism Management Institute Conference.
Featured PROJECT
It was fantastic to work with the ambassador team on a project to promote the local area.
Using their brand identity imagery, I designed a set of badges to represent 5 different local areas. Each badge design was unique and featured a popular landmark.
Featured PROJECT
When Sugar Noms started their subscription service, it was lovely to be involved with some of the goodies that they wanted to add alongside the sweet treats.
They opted for a cork coaster, which I created a special pattern for, based on their love of bright colours and inspired by their huge range of pick ‘n’ mix sweets.
Featured PROJECT
Sophie teaches hypnobirthing classes to expectant parents in the local area. She wanted to put together a pack for her clients, including a set of affirmation cards with her chosen colours, style & affirmations to suit her classes. We worked on creating a design and I put together a set of 12 affirmation cards, which I printed & packaged with a custom paper bellyband.
Featured PROJECT
A mum and her three daughters work together to collect, prepare and make jewellery from sea glass on their local beach. I was asked to use the logo they had drawn as the basis for a postcard design to be added in with their orders. On the bottom of the postcards I also added the care instructions for the jewellery, so that it could be cut and used as a separate tag.
